The war in Sudan has now passed 1,000 days. Much of what we see in the news reflects the scale of the crisis: widespread displacement and the collapse of the systems people rely on to meet their most basic needs, from access to healthcare and education, to the availability of everyday essentials. The UN has described Sudan as a crisis of staggering proportions, with civilians paying the highest price.
Behind those headlines are millions of families continuing to navigate daily life in the midst of prolonged conflict. What is far less visible is the work required to keep everyday routines going at all, and the coordination, time and persistence needed to make even basic support possible.
In a crisis like this, progress is built slowly and deliberately.
After months of planning, coordination and cross-border logistics, Goods For Good has delivered essential goods to Yida Camp in South Sudan.
Yida Camp is home to families living with long-term displacement and is now overwhelmed by new arrivals fleeing ongoing conflict in Sudan. Food shortages, malnutrition and stretched resources are placing severe pressure on daily life. While efforts continue to maintain basic services such as education, limited supplies and growing needs for food, water and shelter make stability increasingly difficult for families and children alike.
Deliveries like this are rarely quick or straightforward. They require careful coordination across borders, trusted relationships on the ground and a clear understanding of local context. This delivery was made possible through close collaboration with GREEN KORDOFAN LIMITED, whose local presence and knowledge were critical in navigating last-mile delivery safely and appropriately.
In places shaped by conflict and displacement, education is about more than what happens in a classroom. It offers structure, routine and a sense of normality for children whose lives have been disrupted.
When basic essentials such as school supplies, clothing and hygiene items are missing, that stability quickly falls away. Children struggle to attend regularly, to concentrate and to take part. Over time, the absence of these everyday items limits not just learning, but confidence and opportunity.
Access to practical goods helps create the conditions where education can continue. It supports dignity, restores routine and keeps an eye on the future, making learning possible even in the most uncertain circumstances.
Education cannot be separated from access to everyday essentials. When those basics are missing, learning becomes harder to sustain, no matter where a child lives.
Our work in Sudan reflects the thinking behind Schools For Good, one of Goods For Good’s core programmes. Schools For Good focuses on collecting and redistributing essential school uniform and supplies to children whose families are facing financial hardship. It is not a seasonal “back-to-school” response, but a year-round commitment to supporting children’s education wherever access to essentials is a barrier, in the UK and internationally.
The programme is built on a simple principle: every child deserves the tools they need to learn and thrive. By redistributing surplus goods, Schools For Good helps reduce waste while making a practical and immediate difference to children’s lives.
Whether in a UK classroom or a refugee camp in South Sudan, the challenge is often the same. When essentials are missing, education becomes harder to maintain. When they are in place, children are better able to find routine, stability and a sense of continuity, even in the most uncertain circumstances.
In the midst of an ongoing and devastating conflict, this delivery represents a small but meaningful step. It reflects what progress looks like in prolonged crisis: the result of sustained effort, coordination and long-term commitment rather than quick fixes.
We continue to work alongside trusted partners to move practical goods to the places where they are needed most, supporting education and everyday life in some of the most challenging circumstances.
