Tackling Youth Related Anti-Social Behaviour in Hertfordshire's Most Deprived Areas

The Friday Night Project is an initiative dedicated to improving the lives of young people in Cowley Hill, one of Hertfordshire's most deprived areas. Over the past two years, the project has engaged 636 young people in 64 sessions promoting physical activity as well as educating on healthy relationships, well-being and making a lasting positive impact on the community.

  • The project has positively affected local youth-related anti-social behaviour on Fridays during delivery hours and into the weekend.

By providing high-quality sportswear and equipment to our partners Herts Sport and Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) , Goods For Good has ensured every participant has been able to fully engage in these enriching experiences, regardless of their financial situation.

Providing Opportunities Beyond Sports

The value of participating in these activities is immense, with the sessions providing vital education on healthy relationships, drug and alcohol awareness, and overall well-being. The multi-sport activities foster physical health, positive behaviour, and community cohesion. Through ongoing participation, these sessions instil discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills which are crucial attributes for the development and future success of these young people.

By providing these young people with high-quality and well-known sport-branded products supplied by Goods For Good, the project created a leveller for these young people.

Role Models and Mentorship

One of the significant benefits of the Friday Night Project is the presence of positive role models and mentors. Coaches and volunteers act as role models, guiding and inspiring the young participants. This mentorship is critical in helping them make positive life choices and setting them on a path to a brighter future.

Mental Health and Well-Being

Mental health and well-being are at the core of our mission. The structured environment of the Friday Night Project provides a safe space for young people to express themselves, build self-esteem, and develop resilience. These sessions also offer a platform for discussing important issues like mental health, helping participants understand and manage their emotions better.

The donations demonstrate that we truly value them. This support not only enhances their participation but also boosts their self-esteem and sense of belonging. It’s a powerful message that their well-being and development are important to us.

Community Impact

Our contributions help bridge the gap for these young people, allowing them to participate with pride and enthusiasm. The project not only benefits the individuals but also strengthens the community by fostering a sense of belonging and unity. One participant expressed, “This is incredible. I need new trainers, and now my parents don't have to spend money they don't have on them. Thank you so much.”

The Importance of Access to Sport

Access to sports is vital for children, offering a multitude of benefits that shape their life outcomes. Sports contribute significantly to the holistic development of children promoting physical health, mental well-being, social skills, academic performance, discipline, leadership, and inclusivity. These benefits extend beyond childhood, providing a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling life. By removing the barriers to participation Goods For Good is ensuring that these young people reap these benefits.

Each young person received at least one of the following items; trainers, sport shorts, sport t-shirts, sport outdoor wear and sports leggings.

Sport For Good

In 2021, we launched our Sport For Good initiative, dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities by providing essential sportswear, clothing, and footwear. Since then the initiative has played a crucial role in empowering individuals by removing barriers to participation in physical activities. Our partnership with HSP, which began in the same year, has flourished, enabling us to support various sports-based programs such as the Fit, Fed and Read holiday camps, which are designed to engage children and young people in physical activities, ensuring they stay active, nourished, and literate during the holidays.
