It can be hard to understand how something as simple as deodorant can make such a difference when it’s something we can buy without a second thought. But for those living in poverty, everyday basics like deodorant are luxury items and purchasing them can mean going without food or heating. That's why, In 2021, we partnered with For Common Good to help us reach more people in need of toiletries and hygiene goods.
For Common Good makes donating the goods we need easy. The website works like a gift registry for charitable causes, allowing us to list the items we need most, for example nappies, baby wipes and sanitary towels, so you can then select the items you wish to donate to us.
By coming together, we can create a more equitable and safe environment through the purchase and donation of hygiene and toiletry products to those who need it. We've listed the items we need, all you need to do is pick the items you want to donate and they'll deliver them, it's as simple as that. You don't even have to pay for postage; you only pay for the products. The zero waste platform, means you can make your donation knowing you’re also helping to reduce plastic, paper and card waste.
Hygiene Poverty could look like struggling to wash your hair because you can’t afford shampoo or having to reuse nappies for your children. In 2022 the Hygiene Bank issued the Hygiene Poverty Report which identified that, amongst other things, hygiene poverty is a barrier to employment and education, with many respondents avoiding job interviews, work or education, highlighting its potential to trap people in a cycle of poverty.
1 in 5 parents surveyed admitted their child wears the same underwear at least two days in a row because they can't afford cleaning products.
Social isolation was also identified as a significant impact of hygiene poverty, with many respondents reporting feelings of shame and anxiety, which often leads to isolation.
It's a sad reality that almost 6% of the UK's population are affected by hygiene poverty. That's over 3million adults unable to purchase the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products we take for granted.
Your donation will help us in our effort to end hygiene poverty. Whether it’s providing essential grooming products to a mum who has fled with her children from an abusive relationship or providing toiletries to someone who is homeless, your donation goes to those that need it most.
Help us fight hygiene poverty and help keep others safe by donating items like soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, and more. Visit our wish list today to view the items we currently need.
