What Happens When Corporate Volunteering Meets Team Building? Lessons from Our World Cup Packathon
As the World Cup got underway, we welcomed 63 people from 10 organisations to our new Croxley Park home for the Goods For Good World Cup Packathon.
On the surface, it looked like a team-building event. There were team outfits, quiz rivalries, a live leaderboard and plenty of friendly competition. But beneath the fun was a simple question: Can corporate volunteering be genuinely engaging whilst creating meaningful impact?
The answer, judging by the atmosphere on the day, was a resounding yes.
More Than Just a Team-Building Activity
Businesses are increasingly looking for ways to bring colleagues together outside of the office. Traditional team-building activities still have their place, but many organisations are now looking for opportunities that combine teamwork with social impact.
The World Cup Packathon was designed with exactly that in mind.
Over the course of the day, teams worked together to sort, prepare and pack essential goods that will now be distributed through Goods For Good's Kind Network of charity and community partners across the UK. By the end of the event:
492 boxes- of sportswear and footwear had been packed
3,936 Kilos- of goods had been diverted from landfill
3,936 Kilos- an estimated 98,400kg of CO₂ emissions had been prevented
2,000+ people- an estimated 2,000 young people will benefit from the goods prepared on the day

Why Corporate Volunteering Matters
For many businesses, volunteering days are no longer simply a way to give back. They are an opportunity to strengthen teams, build connections between colleagues and demonstrate a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
The most successful volunteering activities create a clear connection between effort and outcome. Participants can see exactly what they have achieved and understand the difference their contribution will make. That was one of the reasons the World Cup Packathon worked so well. Every team could see the impact building throughout the day, box by box.
Supporting Sport For Good
The event, delivered in partnership with Oaklands College, supported our Sport For Good programme. Through Sport For Good, donated sportswear, footwear and equipment are distributed to grassroots sports clubs, community organisations and charities supporting children and young people facing hardship.
Access to the right kit is often the first step towards participation. But the impact extends much further. Sport can provide routine, positive role models, friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging for young people who may otherwise miss out.
Interested in getting involved?
One of the most common questions we were asked after the World Cup Packathon was simple: "When's the next one?" While the Packathon was a special one-off event, corporate volunteering opportunities take place throughout the year at Goods For Good. Whether you're looking for a team-building activity with purpose, a corporate volunteering day for your employees, or a way to support your organisation's ESG and CSR goals, we'd love to hear from you.
